The first generation of BMW 5 Series – E12 specs – design and models

The E12 is the first generation of BMW 5 Series – it seems to be forgotten but to be fair, it could be the most beautiful car of 70s.

It was produced from 1972 to 1981. Designed by Paul Bracq who worked for Mercedes, BMW and Peugeot back in the days.

During his time at BMW, Paul Bracq also designed the BMW Turbo concept, later that car become the BMW M1.

The dimensions of E12 BMW 5 Series:

Wheelbase – 2,636 mm
Length – 4,620 mm
Width – 1,690 mm
Height – 1,425 mm

There were many models of E12 BMW 5 Series starting from 518 to M535i.

The 518 model were produced from 1974 to 1981 with 1.8L engine, four cylindres, 89 horse power. BMW 520 model had 2.0L engine with 113 horse power, and four cylinder engine. 520i model had a little bit more power than normal 520 model, with 128 horsepower.

However, the M535i model was amazing, produced from 1980 to 1981, who had 3.5L engine, 215 horsepower.
